Hospitality
Thank you for helping with hospitality on Sunday morning. Your help is deeply appreciated by the congregation. Preparing and serving coffee and juice on Sunday morning is an important task. It is much easier when two or three people work together. We have done our best to arrange for at least two people to serve as host/hostess each Sunday.
- Supplies.
Coffee pots: The larger pot is for brewed coffee; the small pot (30 cups) is for hot water for tea and instant coffee (decaffeinated). Coffee, tea, sugar, artificial sweetener and creamer are in the upper cabinets (the ones above the refrigerator; the ones on the left contain supplies belonging to our renters).
Paper cups, cup holders, pitchers: Central base cabinet.
Spoons: Central drawer.
Paper towels: towel dispenser over sink.
Terry cloth towels and napkins: deep drawers next to the refrigerator.
Large black trash bags, carpet and other cleaning supplies: Utility closet across the Narthex hall, by the water fountain.
White plastic bags for parlor wastebasket: Hutch drawers
Children’s lemonade: upper right cabinet
Reserve supplies: in the farthest closet behind the sofa in the parlor. - Setup. ”Traffic flow„ at the coffee station is congested. It may work best to arrange the large pot, with cups, sugar and cream, sweetener, etc. on the coffee station counter, and put the small pot for tea and instant coffee on the nearby hutch, and a second sugar/creamer set there, with spoons, etc.
- Making Coffee. Recipes are posted on the inside of the upper cabinet door. For a typical service, you should probably make 50 cups. For an atypical service, you will need to judge the quantity. Please use a filter with the coffee. (There are no filters that fit, so just take one and tear a hole in the middle of it and put it in the basket.) Filters are located in the middle drawer. Please place a small tray under the coffee pot so that the black legs of the pot do not stain the counter top. A large pot of coffee needs to brew for one hour.
- Pouring. It helps relieve congestion if the host/hostess pours and has cups ready and waiting immediately after worship. Step out during the last hymn and pour the children's juice and the coffee so that is ready when the first people arrive.
- Juice for the children. Juice is served in the narthex hallway adjacent to the coffee counter. In the Narthex, near the water fountain, you will find a small metal roll-about table from which children's juice may be served. A recipe is posted on the cabinet door. Please use only lemonade or other, non-red drink to help prevent indelible stains from spills. Prepare the powdered drink in the large pitcher, and then transfer it to the smaller serving pitcher to aid small children in serving themselves. Use the 5 oz. cold cups.
- Snacks. The congregation appreciates the snacks that are provided by those who do hospitality. If you would like to provide snacks, please do so. There are reimbursement forms in the office (on the shelf under the mail slots) that you can complete and put in the Treasurers mail slot for reimbursement of any money you spend on refreshments. There are serving plates and trays in the various cupboards and shelves in the parlor.
- Clean-up. When coffee hour is over, please empty and wash both pots and return them to the cabinet. Coffee grounds must not be put down the sink but into a plastic trash bag. Fresh white plastic bags are in the hutch bottom cabinet next to the wastebasket. There is not custodial service in the Parlor; please take all the trash and garbage out to the dumpster or home with you. Empty and clean the juice pitchers and store in the cabinet. If you used the cloth towels, please take them home, launder and return them. Please run the vacuum to pick up any crumbs. The vacuum is located in the Parlor closet. This is especially important as the Washington Immanuel worship service follows ours, and we do not want to leave them a dirty parlor.
- If you cannot serve on your assigned Sunday, please arrange for a substitute from the master "HUGENS" list and let the church secretary know of the change. Call the church office at 703-938-1555 by Tuesday afternoon so the change can be published in the bulletin.
Once again, thank you for serving Emmaus in this hospitable way.
