Youth: Activities and Sunday School

Youth are an important and energetic part of Emmaus. Children join the service each Sunday, leaving partway through for Sunday School, often after enjoying a lively Children's Sermon.

Nursery Care

Babies may be brought to the nursery before the service begins or at any point during the service. If you prefer to have your baby stay with you during the service, the Parlor area is equipped with sound and may be a more comfortable place to sit with your children.

Bumblebees (Toddlers)

Two and young three year olds may be dropped off in the Bumblebees' Sunday School room either at the beginning of church or after the children's sermon. Each week they will explore an age appropriate theme by hearing a story, singing songs, making crafts, playing with blocks, and playing pretend.

Road to Emmaus Workshop Sunday School

Children in preschool through fifth grade participate in our Road to Emmaus Workshop Sunday School. Each month, the children study a different Bible story that is related to a yearly theme. For 2007 - 2008, our theme is the Quest for Identity. We'll be studying the following stories this year:

September
Jacob & Esau
October
Joseph and His Brothers
November
Joseph in Egypt
December
Christmas Around the World
January
The Samaritan Woman at the Well
February
Zacchaeus
March
Mary Magdalene
April
Easter Around the World
May
Paul: Who Can Be a Christian?
June
Martin Luther and the Reformation

There are 3 Sunday School classes: Inchworms (4’s, 5’s and kindergarteners), 1st and 2nd grade, and 3rd through 5th grade. Each class attends a different workshop each Sunday that explores the Bible story. We have art workshops in our Creation Station, cooking workshops in our Divinity Diner, storytelling workshops in our Caravan Camp, and a variety of workshops (geography, video, games) in our Marketplace. The workshops used in our Sunday School are from Cornerstones Publishing.

Junior High Youth

The Junior High class comprises students in the 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grades. The class meets every Sunday, except on Communion Sundays which are usually the first Sunday of the month. The class is discussion based and follows the lectionary readings, along with current topics of interest. The Junior High class also participates in service projects such as Our Daily Bread.

Senior High Youth

The Senior High Youth Group is made up of students in 9th through 12th grade. Starting this fall, they will meet on alternate Sunday mornings for fellowship and a planned program. Traditionally, they have also prepared and served the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, written an original Christmas skit presented at the All Church Potluck in December, and planned and conducted the Youth Sunday worship service.

Confirmation

Confirmation is offered to ninth graders and older youth who have not yet been confirmed. Our next confirmation class will be offered in fall 2008.

Children's Choir

Children's Choir is available to children ages 4 through 12. They meet for practice from September to May after church while their parents attend coffee hour. They sing in church on select Sundays. They provide the core group of participants for the annual Children¹s Day program.

Other Youth Activities

Children's Day is a Sunday, usually in May, when the children of Emmaus provide the worship service for the entire congregation. It is a Sunday not to be missed!

Bibles are presented to 4th graders every year, usually in September, in a special presentation during the worship service. Graduating high school seniors are also recognized and honored in June.
